Koda Dichromatic Desk Diver

The idea was simple, a high contrast black and white diver with high legibility. One thing led to another and then this…

When an idea bites it can consume me until I realise it. I’m not the most patient person though and I often build with the parts I have on hand. With this build I had to wait for the case to be Cerakoted and when I finally got the call to pick it up I was a bit nervous about the finish and whether it would look tacky. The Stormtrooper white Cerakote did not disappoint.

While I was waiting for the parts to be painted I worked on the dial, handset, and insert. I knew I didn’t want lume for this desk diver watch so without that complication I settled on black indices over a glossy white dial. I ended up making a little template to apply the indices and after some trial and error they turned out rather well.

I spent some time searching for a suitable handset but almost everyting had lume and didn’t seem to suit the theme so I decided to make a set. I used the same material for the indices, hands, and insert which lends the watch a cohesivness I would have lost had I used some random set of painted hands.

The insert was the first piece of this build that I started to design and I’m more attached to it than the rest. It was overshadowed by the other bold black and white parts but I hope to evolve and use this insert with other diver builds. It was designed to be used as both a count up and a count down insert that uses the markers of one scale only. The 10 and 40 numbers are the only two common ones to both scales and the white section had to be indexed for 20 minutes to make it work. Since there is no actual 12 o’clock on this insert I didn’t use a triangle to avoid confusion.

The strap choice was easy and basically selected itself – it had to be black rubber with white buckle just to complete the look.
