I don’t have access to expensive and complicated pad printers, nor do I know how to screen print. My main machine is a fiber laser which is incredibly accurate but also has a lot of limits. You may have noticed that my designs are driven by these constraints and I find it both challenging and rewarding. By embracing the constraints I can focus my effort and from time to time I come up with something that inspires me to spend my weekend making revision upon revision until I have something I’m proud of.
Morse Koda started as a simple idea of a dial divided into 4 sections. It was always black and white with a ring around the outer edge of the dial. The insert may not be the most usable but after playing with a few versions I decided to stick with a very clean and simple one so as to not detract from the dial.
The hour and minute hands are custom made and cut to the exact length needed. I even went so far as to round the edge of the minute hand with the same radius as the white ring. Now, that’s not really an easily noticeable feature but it gives me joy knowing it’s there.
By far my favourite feature, apart from the KODA spelled out in Morse Code on the 9 o’clock line, is the black tipped seconds hand. I have to admit I dimensioned this whole dial around the length of that seconds hand.
