My watch box is light on diver style watches so over the weekend I built this desk diver which ticks my requirements. I wanted a simple look with high legibility and a classic style insert with a 60 click bezel which I find more useful than the 120’s.
I like slim inserts but with ageing eyesight I need large numbers and markers. With that in mind I wanted to use the whole width for the numerals and I added a circular line near the base to give it a slimming effect. It’s a little detail but it really does do a good job of breaking up the large black spaces. It also allowed me to play with the markers a bit and add some interest instead of using the same ones throughout.
The dial was another experiment in legibility. I had selected the chapter ring first and I had to try to match the dial, or get it close enough anyway, to the darker silver of the chapter ring. Mixing some speckled grey with a clear coat did the trick and the resulting raw steel look just adds to the rugged tool look for me. No lume as you can guess but I’m ok with that.
The hands were last. I built several variants and the red tipped minute hand has become my favourite part of this whole watch. It may look odd but it doesn’t dominate the dial like a full red hand might while still standing out for quick and easy time checks. Oh, and sure, there is lume on the lillipop of the seconds hand so you can time elapsed seconds in the dark. :p
